Enjoy the ride
The station of Jenbach is the home base of the Achensee Steam Cog Railway and well-known amongst railway enthusiasts as it is here that three different track widths meet: the Achenseebahn with a track gauge of 1m, the Zillertalbahn with 760mm and the OEBB –the Austrian Railways- with 1.435m standard gauge track.
With a whistle and a puff of steam you’re off to the first request stop of Burgeck. This is where you start appreciating the slight tilt of the bench you’re sitting on: the steepest incline of 160 per thousand starts right here. Enjoy a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountain ranges –the Stubaier Alps, the imposing Zillertaler Alps and the “Wilder Kaiser”- before the train takes you into an alpine forest.
Here a glimpse of cows in lush green meadows, there a gaze at ancient trees that seem to grow into the sky, and as you can almost feel the huge power of the steam engine you arrive at Eben. You find yourself amidst the majestic mountain ranges of the Rofan and the Karwendel, and the deep blue lake –the Achensee- is but a stone’s throw away… getting closer by the minute… a short ride to Maurach station at 956m… one last turn and we reach the shores of the magnificent alpine lake, where the train terminates. In this breathtaking setting it is easy to dream away on lazy lakeside walks or mountain hikes of various levels, get carried away enjoying the many sports and leisure facilities on offer and give in to the many temptations of food and drink promising a true Austrian experience. Fancy a ride back? The Achensee Steam Cog Railway will take you back to Jenbach just as safely as it brought you up to the lake. Enjoy the downhill experience!
